Girls given rewards in 1804 at Lady Palmerston’s School of Industry, Romsey

Aside from dame schools and private tutors, it was unusual for education of any sort to be made available to girls at the start of the nineteenth century. Mary, Viscountess Palmerston, was committed to this cause. The rewards — of 2s. 6d., 2s. and 1s. 6d. each month — were generous and no girl received them more than once in the year.
