The seven leaders accept the plan for the transfer of power, 3 June 1947
What had been under discussion for years was concluded very quickly. On 3 June, the Viceroy expressed his relief at the responses from the Indian leaders. Where necessary, the ratification of other parties, for example, the All-India Congress Committee and the All-India Muslim League Council, was obtained. The plan for independence based on partition was announced publicly, with radio broadcasts by the British Prime Minister, the Viceroy, Nehru, Jinnah and Baldev Singh. On 4 June, Lord Mountbatten had a further interview with Gandhi, and he held an extraordinary press conference, before some 300 of the world’s press.
