Independence, India: just after midnight, Delhi 14/15 August 1947
Lord Mountbatten with Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of the new India, and Rajendra Prasad, President of the Constituent Assembly, just after midnight, Delhi 14/15 August 1947. On the morning of 16 August, the Boundary Commission announced its reports defining the borders of the new dominions. The detail of partition was always likely to be controversial. The inclusion of Gurdaspur District in East Punjab in India, and the Chittagong Hill Tracts in East Pakistan, dismayed Pakistan and Indian politicians respectively; and the division of the Sikhs was keenly felt. The leaders, however, did not repudiate the award.
