Travel journal of the second Viscount Palmerston, Paris, 1792

Henry Temple, second Viscount Palmerston (1739–1802) was a Whig peer and travelled widely in Europe. The family left Paris on 7 August 1792, three days before the French king was deposed. ‘Passing thro’ the Fauxbourg of St Antoine the mob gathered round the carriage in which 2 of our children and some of the servants were which happened to be a little behind that in which we travelled ourselves. They were very violent in their abusive language but luckily their object was to make them go to the place where the officers of the section were sitting.’
